Spring Valley
Community Alliance

Inspired by the work of IPS and the Casa de Oro Alliance, residents of Spring Valley living south of Highway 94 formed the Spring Valley Community Alliance (http://www.thesvca.org) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Alliance is focused on building resident pride and participation in community efforts to address drug and alcohol issues, homelessness, substandard streets, walkability, and infrastructure development. Parts of Spring Valley have been identified as Environmental Justice Communities, meaning that the area and the residents living there bear a “disproportionate burden of pollution and associated health risks based on legacy decisions that place industrial or polluting uses next to these communities.” The alliance has already made significant achievements by successfully advocating for clean-up of Lamar Park and having the County of San Diego address homeless encampments in the park, along with facilitating weekly clean-ups that have removed hundreds of pounds of trash, built relationships with County Planning, Code Enforcement, and the California Highway Patrol.
